The End of the Heroic Era of Antarctic Exploration
Sunday, April 29, 2018
12noon – 2:00pm
Merlyn Paine’s father, Stuart Paine was a field navigator, radio operator and dog team driver for the Second Byrd Antarctic Expedition of 1933 – 1935, the last major privately funded expedition of Antarctic discovery. Through her father’s diaries and film she will discuss his experiences.
Depicting almost incomprehensible mental and physical duress and unhesitating courage, Paine’s tale is one of the most compelling stories in polar history, surpassing other accounts with its immediacy and adventure as it captures the majesty and mystery of the untouched Antarctic.
