Unity Founders Charles and Myrtle Filmore

Unity was founded in the late 1800’s by a dynamic, motivated, and intelligent husband and wife team, Charles and Myrtle Fillmore. The Fillmore’s spent years studying what is now known as the mind-body connection, as they each felt they had health challenges that might benefit from the use of denials and affirmations, as well as a healthy dose of very positive thinking.

They began by studying the works of Ralph Waldo Emerson of the Unitarian school, Mary Baker Eddy, the founder of Christian Science, and Emma Curtis Hopkins, an independent practitioner who had studied with Mrs. Eddy. By the mid-1900’s, their studies ranged far and wide, as they searched for and found a spirituality that was inclusive and love- and prayer-based.

Unity Village, Missouri

Unity continues today as a dynamic force within Christianity. Though Unity centers have historically been referred to as churches, the trend now is to refer to them as centers for spiritual study and enrichment. There are Unity centers all over the world along with thousands of small study groups in many countries. Unity has for years considered itself a leader in the New Thought tradition.

Unity of the Sierra is an active member of Unity (publishers of the Daily Word) and Unity Worldwide Ministries. Our members and guests embrace such varied subjects as prayer and meditation, finding your perfect mission in life, interfaith philosophy, the effect of thought on brain activity, prosperity principles, outreach and selfless service, chaplaincy, book studies, and movie nights. There are many exciting opportunities to become involved in activities sponsored by Unity of the Sierra.

Please come play with us, as we explore and study the inner psychology of the self, our relationship with each other, and our relationship to the Universe as a whole. Unity is an inclusive philosophy, and a casual environment is enjoyed at each Unity event.
