Top Ten Reasons to Know Unity’s Five Principles

Article By Paula Schneider

In 2009, Unity minister, Rev. Ellen Debenport, wrote The Five Principles:  A Guide to Practical Spirituality, which elaborated, in a wonderful way, on Unity’s Five Principles.  At that time, Rev. Larry and I spent a great deal of time talking about the five principles and how knowing them enriched our lives.  We came up with a meaningful list of reasons why a Unity Truth student should memorize the five principles, and we called it “Top Ten Reasons to Know Unity’s Five Principles,” based on a coaching web site that we found very useful in the late 90′s.

So, here are the Top Ten Reasons to Know Unity’s Five Principles.  We hope you will take time to place the principles in your mind and heart so you can retrieve them at a moment’s notice.

1.  To have a greater understanding of Unity philosophy.

2.  To be able to explain Unity’s teachings to others.

3.  To feel a greater connection with other people in your Unity community, which will lead to increased ownership in your Unity family home.

4.  To increase personal accountability for your beliefs and actions.

5.  To begin to know the truth of your self and your relationship to the Creator, the universe, and humanity as a whole.

6.  To possess a deeper understanding of Unity talks, classes, workshops, and other activities.

7.  To help yourself remember the path to Truth when going through difficult times.

8.  To encourage and stimulate you to deepen your study of metaphysics and mysticism and to practice contemplation.

9.  To begin to recognize that all people have pure souls (Principle #2) which creates an open heart filled with compassion.

10.  To be more able to serve as a teacher, helping others when they forget the truth of their being.
